US embassy issues health alert for Cuba amid oil blockade, sanctions

This issue stems from the Trump administration's continued refusal to release fuel shipments necessary for power generation on the island. The embassy stated that the degradation of the water and energy infrastructure has led to a significant rise in diarrheal illness across Cuba.

This degradation affects water supply, food storage, and temperature control, making it difficult for residents and travelers to maintain proper hygiene and food safety.

The US warning follows a fuel blockade imposed by the Trump administration nine months ago, which has contributed to frequent power cuts and hindered refrigeration and sanitary measures. UN-appointed human rights experts have labeled the fuel blockade as a violation of international law and warned of a growing risk of disease outbreaks on the island. The humanitarian consequences, according to the experts, are already unfolding into a full-blown crisis, threatening the rights to health, life, food, and development.

Cuba has opened pharmacies and gas stations to private firms, but the US administration maintains that the sanctions are necessary to force a change in the island's government. The Trump administration views Cuba as a national security threat following Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution. Residents have been complaining of widespread illnesses causing days of diarrhea, fever, and body aches, making it impossible to sleep without air conditioning or a fan, and preserving food without refrigeration.

Blackouts spanning days have become common due to the US fuel blockade. The US health alert advises travelers and residents to be cautious of perishable foods that may have been inadequately stored and to avoid foods that have been sitting at room temperature for extended periods.
