US embassy issues health alert for Cuba amid oil blockade, sanctions

This warning comes nine months after the Trump administration imposed a fuel blockade on Cuba, causing frequent power outages and complicating refrigeration and sanitary measures. Human rights experts from the United Nations have described the fuel blockade as a violation of international law, and they have warned of a growing risk of disease outbreaks on the island.

The humanitarian consequences are already turning into a severe crisis, putting the rights to health, life, food, and development at risk. Many Cubans have complained about persistent illnesses causing diarrhea, fever, and body aches, leading to bedridden conditions, especially during the summer when air conditioning and refrigeration are crucial for food preservation.
