Trump warns Iran as US weighs fresh strike on nuclear site

The United States, alongside Britain, France, and Germany, has drafted a resolution for potential consideration by the UN nuclear watchdog's Board of Governors. This resolution aims to refer Iran to the UN Security Council for noncompliance with its nuclear nonproliferation obligations, a violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Iran is legally required to declare all nuclear material and activities, allowing international inspectors to verify peaceful uses. The diplomatic move has been under consideration since June 2025, following the IAEA board's official finding of Iran's noncompliance with these obligations.

The resolution requests the International Atomic Energy Agency's director general to transmit it and previous resolutions to all members of the agency and to the Security Council and General Assembly of the United Nations. It also stresses the support for a diplomatic solution to the challenges posed by Iran's nuclear program and encourages all parties to engage constructively in diplomacy.

However, specific punitive measures by the UN are unlikely, as Iran's allies Russia and China hold veto power on the UN Security Council. The draft resolution, which has not yet been formally submitted, may still undergo amendments before submission and a vote at the upcoming IAEA Board of Governors meeting in Vienna.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warned that Iran's heavily fortified underground nuclear site, known as Pickaxe Mountain, could be targeted by the US "very soon" if any activity is detected. Trump defended the US military campaign against Iran, stating that its primary objective is to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. He also claimed that US intervention had prevented a wider regional conflict and argued that the US had stopped Iran from having a nuclear weapon in just five months.
