North Korea orders sweeping rebuild of northern border blockade

North Korea has ordered a comprehensive reconstruction of its northern border defenses, reaffirming a strict "shoot-on-sight" policy and tightening its blockade network. The directive, issued by the Workers' Party of Korea in early August, mandates the rebuilding of landmine fields and reaffirms the authority of border guards to open fire on unauthorized individuals.

Soldiers have been mobilized to bury landmines and repair barbed-wire barriers, despite expressing frustration over the dangerous conditions. The directive aims to prevent defections, smuggling, and information leaks, especially during the summer months when illegal crossings tend to increase. Authorities have also ordered round-the-clock surveillance to keep North Koreans near the border away from the riverbank.

The change has alarmed border-area residents, who fear that even mundane activities like gathering firewood could now result in death. Smugglers, who previously relied on border guards' tacit approval to cross into China, express dismay over the severed economic lifeline.
