Tens of thousands of Croatians protest over hazardous waste

Zagreb witnessed a massive protest on Saturday as tens of thousands of Croatians demanded urgent action to clean up thousands of tonnes of illegally dumped hazardous waste in the Lika region. The waste, including electronic and medical items, was discovered in early 2025, contaminating pristine forests, rivers, and national parks. Authorities have been investigating 10 individuals and four companies for importing waste from neighboring countries and dumping it alongside medical waste in Gospic.

The situation came to light in August when prosecutors released a report confirming soil contamination, warning of significant risks to the environment and public health. Despite the water supply remaining safe, health authorities have urged immediate action to protect the region. The protest, dubbed "Walk for Lika, Walk for Croatia," was organized by President Zoran Milanovic, the opposition, public figures, and non-governmental organizations.

Protesters demanded a concrete cleanup plan within 20 days, removal of the waste within three months, and accountability for those responsible. Conservative Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic had earlier pledged to cover the site by mid-October and proceed with the removal process.
