Teachers’ Day 2026: President Murmu Honours 48 School Teachers With National Teachers’ Awards In Delhi; Calls For Technology, Independent Thinking

On September 5, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu honored 48 school teachers with the National Teachers' Awards in New Delhi during Teachers' Day celebrations. The awardees were chosen from 27 states, seven Union Territories, and six central government organizations for their commitment to education and support for students beyond traditional classroom learning.

During her remarks, President Murmu encouraged educators to keep learning, use technology, and employ innovative teaching methods. She emphasized the importance of fostering students' independent thinking and critical inquiry. The President also commended teachers for their role in nurturing students' talents and strengthening character.

She praised their ability to identify students' unique potential, inspire excellence, and create environments that encourage students to ask questions and explore new ideas. President Murmu paid tribute to the late Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the former President whose birthday is celebrated as Teachers' Day in India. Born an exceptional teacher, he made significant contributions to education and public life.

Teachers' Day is observed annually on September 5 to honor the invaluable contributions of educators in shaping students and strengthening society. In addition to the school teachers, the National Teachers' Awards 2026 recognized 21 higher education faculty members from higher education institutions and polytechnics, including 12 from central institutions, 5 from state universities (3 government and 2 private), and 4 from polytechnics (2 government and 2 private). Each awardee will have a short documentary screening their work and achievements at the ceremony.
