Suspected SGR vandal arrested after CCTV detects intrusion along railway corridor

Nairobi, Kenya - Authorities have apprehended an individual suspected of damaging copper earthing wires along the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) after CCTV footage captured an intrusion, according to Kenya Railways. The suspect was taken into custody at K375, situated between the Sultan and Lesonkoyo SGR Passing Stations, following the detection of the intrusion. Kenya Railways stated that the suspect's arrest is the result of swift action by security teams, police officers, and members of the local community.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect was allegedly tampering with the copper earthing wires and could be connected to other instances of railway vandalism along the corridor. Kenya Railways emphasized that the apprehended individual remains in police custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.

The incident underscores the ongoing efforts to safeguard railway infrastructure from vandalism, which poses a risk to passenger safety and railway operations. Kenya Railways cautioned that vandalism of railway property is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment for life under Section 233(e) of the Penal Code.
