Takaichi seen retaining foreign and finance ministers in Cabinet reshuffle

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is contemplating retaining Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama in their Cabinet positions, according to sources within her administration. The reshuffle, expected in mid-September, will see the prime minister maintaining key members of her Cabinet and the leadership team of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Takaichi believes retaining Motegi and Katayama is crucial for ongoing policy continuity in foreign affairs and finance. Notably, Motegi was defeated in the first round of the LDP leadership election last October but supported Takaichi in the final round. He has been actively promoting Tokyo's relationship with the U.S., meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on several occasions.

Motegi still holds some support within the LDP, particularly among members of a faction he once led, and is on good terms with LDP Vice President Taro Aso, who is also staying in his position. Takaichi is likely aiming to strengthen her power base for a potential re-election bid as LDP president in next year's leadership race. Katayama is highly respected by the prime minister and champions the administration's proactive yet responsible fiscal policy.

Takaichi plans to entrust her with handling parliamentary discussions on a bill to reduce the consumption tax rate on food during an upcoming special session in early October. The Cabinet and LDP leadership reshuffles could take place as early as September 16-18, with other likely retainers including LDP Secretary-General Shunichi Suzuki and Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara.
