Tadej Pogacar to miss World Road Cycling Championships after Vuelta crash injuries

Tadej Pogacar, a renowned Slovenian cyclist and five-time Tour de France champion, will miss the World Road Cycling Championships from September 20-27 due to season-ending injuries sustained in a crash during the Vuelta a Espana last Saturday. The crash occurred during stage eight of the 21-stage race, while Pogacar was on his way to becoming the ninth cyclist to win all three Grand Tours (Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta).

Injuries sustained by Pogacar include a concussion, fractures to the C7 cervical vertebrae, and an open clavicle fracture. His team, UAE Team Emirates-XRG, announced his contract extension through 2032. Pogacar expressed his disappointment, stating that he wanted his season to conclude differently. He emphasized the importance of recovery and giving his body the time it needs to heal properly.

A medical director reported that Pogacar is progressing well following surgery and is satisfied with his recovery so far. Despite his current setbacks, Pogacar remains optimistic, focusing on giving himself the best opportunity to return stronger in the upcoming year. The crash not only prevents Pogacar from competing at the World Championships but also keeps him from aiming for another rare achievement - winning all three Grand Tours in a single season.

Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel is expected to headline the World Championships, aiming to become the first man or woman to win four consecutive time trial titles. The U.S. roster features several notable athletes, including Kristen Faulkner, the 2024 Olympic women's road race champion, and Kate Courtney, who made her road worlds debut as a 2018 World mountain bike champion.
