Smart team deployed to Nepal for humanitarian mission [WATCH]

The Vietnamese government has allocated $300,000 in emergency humanitarian aid to Nepal following a devastating natural disaster. This aid is a testament to the longstanding friendship, solidarity, and mutual support between the two countries. The tragedy struck on August 26 when a massive ice collapse on Nepal's Langtang Lirung Mountain, near the border with Tibet, unleashed violent floodwaters.

The torrent swept away entire communities, resulting in widespread mud and debris across downstream regions. The disaster has claimed over 1,300 lives, with more than 5,600 people still unaccounted for, and the majority of casualties and damage occurred in Nepal. Vietnamese leaders expressed their condolences to their counterparts in Nepal and China following the disaster on August 27.

The Nepalese government now faces a massive reconstruction effort, with Director Dharma Raj Upreti of Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority stating that approximately 20,000 homes need to be rebuilt in the devastated zones. The Nepalese government anticipates requiring around $52.6 million during the initial four-month recovery phase to repair damaged roads, install emergency shelters, provide safe drinking water, and restore basic electrical service.

The crisis is further compounded by the United Nations launching an emergency appeal for $50 million to aid over 84,000 displaced and affected residents across Nepal.
