Sean McVay Reveals Aaron Donald's Status for Rams-49ers Season Opener

Rams defensive end Aaron Donald has stunned the NFL by announcing his retirement, only to quickly reverse course and re-sign with his former team. With just under a week remaining before the 2026 season commences, fans are eagerly anticipating the return of the 10-time Pro Bowler and three-time Defensive Player of the Year. Head coach Sean McVay disclosed on Friday that all Rams players will accompany the squad for their season opener against the 49ers in Melbourne, Australia; however, Donald's participation in that game remains uncertain.

McVay admitted he has not yet determined if Donald will suit up for the match. The Rams embarked on a dominant preseason, securing three wins against the Chiefs, Saints, and Chargers, even without their starting lineup. San Francisco boasts an impressive roster, yet even without Donald, the Rams are optimistic about their chances.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford delivered his most productive season to date, while the combination of running backs Puka Nacua and Davante Adams poses a formidable challenge for opposing defenses. The Rams also boast a formidable backfield duo in Kyren Williams and Blake Corum. Defensively, the unit features standout talents Myles Garrett, Byron Young, Kobie Turner, and veteran Poona Ford at tackle.

Donald was anticipated to anchor that defensive line; however, if he is unable to play, McVay and his coaching staff remain content with their current defensive capabilities. Last season, Ford amassed 47 combined tackles, four tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, and two sacks in 17 games, including 10 starts. Donald is currently scheduled to travel to Australia for the kickoff of the 2026 season, which is set for 8:35 p.m. ET on Netflix.
