Rumesh Pathirage wins Diamond League Final with a throw of 89.04m

Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Pathirage claimed victory at the Diamond League Final, accomplishing a remarkable throw of 89.04 meters at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels. Having made his Diamond League debut, Pathirage began with two subpar throws measuring 80.42m and 79.73m. His third attempt, however, was a testament to his prowess, as he surpassed his usual best by achieving an 89.04m throw, thereby leading the competition.

Poland's Dawid Wegner secured the second position with a personal best throw of 87.47m, while world champion Keshorn Walcott rounded out the podium with a season-best throw of 83.99m. This marks Pathirage's second major title of the season, following his gold win at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he outperformed former Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra.

Pathirage qualified for the final after an impressive series of Diamond League triumphs, including victories in Rome (where he set a world record with 92.62m), Doha, Lausanne, Zurich, and a runner-up finish at the Silesia Diamond League. As the current World No. 1, holding the world lead and the only thrower to exceed 92 meters twice this season, Pathirage stands head and shoulders above his competitors.

With Neeraj Chopra sidelined due to an ankle ligament tear, Pathirage now faces off against Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Yashvir Singh, and Indian thrower Rohit Yadav in the men's javelin throw qualifications and final scheduled for September 26 and 28, respectively.
