Restored Amma canteen in Arakkonam inaugurated

After more than a decade since its initial opening, an Amma canteen near the old bus terminus in Arakkonam town, located in Ranipet, was recently revitalized. On Saturday, Minister for Co-operation V. Gandhiraj inaugurated the restored facility. The Amma Canteens in Ranipet, Arcot, Arakkonam, and Walajah towns had been virtually inaugurated by the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in 2015.

Since then, the facility had not undergone any renovation. According to G. Anandan, the Commissioner of Arakkonam municipality, the civic body has carried out the restoration work for the first time, enhancing civic amenities for visitors. The cost of the renovation was ₹11 lakh. Mr. Gandhiraj, accompanied by Collector N. Priya Ravichandran, inspected the renovated canteen.

In Walajah town, a similar project was executed at a cost of ₹9 lakh, which is set to open to the public in the coming week. The kitchen of the renovated canteen was refurbished with new water pipelines and utensils. The electrical lines were thoroughly checked to prevent any power fluctuations and short circuits. A 50,000-liter overhead tank was cleaned, and motor pump sets connected to borewells supplying water to the canteens were refurbished to ensure uninterrupted water supply. The facility also received a fresh coat of paint.
