Punjab faces greater threat from other provinces than 'neighbouring countries': CM Maryam

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz cautioned on Saturday that the province faces a greater security threat from neighboring provinces rather than neighboring countries. At an AI technology event in Lahore, she emphasized that terrorism infiltrates Punjab through its provincial borders. The chief minister noted, "The unfortunate thing is that the threat [Punjab] faces comes less from my neighbouring countries and more from my neighbouring provinces."

She asserted that terrorism enters Punjab from these neighboring provinces, stating that everyone has their eyes on Punjab, yet it remains safe. She highlighted the significant improvement in law and order since her government took office in 2024, citing a reduction in terrorist attacks and the establishment of a strong security system.

Challenges like organized crime and religious intolerance were also identified. Maryam criticized certain groups that spread hatred under the guise of religion, likening them to political parties. She assured that religious events now proceed peacefully, contrasting this with the past religious polarization. Punjab is now heralded as the most AI-enabled province in the country, where billions of rupees have been invested in technology and security.

Under her leadership, terrorists had access to superior technology, including night-vision cameras, but a comprehensive security system has now been implemented. Bulletproof cameras and thermal cameras with drones have been placed at checkpoints and joint checkpoints. She recalled that checkpoint attacks in the past led to the loss of 5 to 10 lives, whereas now, the loss of life has been considerably reduced.

Maryam also acknowledged that katcha areas, once a hub of terrorism and crime, have become largely crime-free due to joint efforts with the military and the Sindh government. She revealed her decision a few days ago to take action against corrupt elements, stating that corruption has become part of daily life, and her government aims to instill a sense of trust in its citizens.
