PS Elijah Mwangi gives update on AFCON infrastructure preps

Kenya's preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are progressing well, according to Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi from the State Department for Sports. The country is set to co-host the event with Uganda and Tanzania. Mwangi highlighted that the CAF delegation, which visited Kenya last week for inspections, has given the nation a high rating for its infrastructure development.

The main competition venues for the 2027 AFCON are Raila Odinga International Stadium and Kasarani Stadium. The principal secretary disclosed that the stadiums are at 95% completion, with additional areas such as press conferences rooms and media tribunes being worked on. Kasarani Stadium's contractor is currently on-site and slated to complete the recommended works by December.

In contrast, Nyayo Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Complex are yet to commence works, as Kenya aims to maintain the availability of these facilities for training purposes. The government has also mandated a new contractor to modify Kirigiti Stadium to meet required standards, following a court case withdrawal. Kenya has identified Raila Odinga International Stadium and Kasarani as the primary competition venues, with Eldoret's Kipchoge Keino Stadium serving as an alternative.
