Philippine VP Duterte posts bail over 'grave threats' against president

Manila, Philippines - Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte posted bail on Saturday after an arrest warrant was issued due to allegations of making death threats against President Ferdinand Marcos, his wife, and a cousin. Duterte had claimed to have hired a hitman to kill the president and his family during a late-night news briefing, though she later stated the comments were misconstrued.

The threat is a central issue in her Senate impeachment trial, which could result in her removal from office and a ban from politics. Duterte willingly appeared in court to settle the warrant, avoiding arrest. Her lawyer, Lawrence Lim, explained that her lawyers advised her to post bail for her safety, as she would have better protection from civilians in the courthouse rather than being detained.

Duterte expressed fear for her life, stating she would not accept bail if unmonitored, fearing police harassment and potential harm in custody. The Philippine presidential palace dismissed her claims as "unfounded," asserting that police were fulfilling their duty to protect citizens. A conviction on the grave threats charge could lead to a six-month prison sentence.

Duterte's legal team emphasized she had no intention of evading the law and would pursue all legal options. The vice president was impeached in May by the House of Representatives for charges including graft and corruption. A guilty verdict in the Senate could end her bid for the presidency in 2028.
