Philippine Vice-President Duterte-Carpio posts bail over alleged Marcos death threat

Philippine Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio posted bail on Saturday, following the issuance of an arrest warrant for allegedly making a death threat against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Duterte-Carpio was charged with "grave threats" after claiming she had hired a hitman to kill the president, his wife, and a congressman cousin if she were to be killed first.

She later claimed the comments were misconstrued. Her alleged assassination threat is also a key point in her ongoing Senate impeachment trial, where a guilty verdict would result in her removal from office and a ban from politics. Duterte-Carpio voluntarily appeared before the court that issued the warrant, avoiding arrest. Her lawyer stated that she feared for her life and expressed concern about being thrown into jail, only to die in her sleep.

Under Philippine law, a conviction on the "grave threats" charge could result in up to six months in prison. Her legal team maintains she has no intention of evading the law and will pursue all legal remedies. Duterte was impeached in May by the House of Representatives for corruption, and a guilty verdict in the Senate would prevent her from running for president in 2028.
