Pat Fitzgerald wins Michigan State debut in a 30-20 victory over Toledo

Michigan State secured a 30-20 victory over Toledo in their debut game as coach Pat Fitzgerald on Friday night. Alessio Milivojevic threw a crucial 5-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Bullard in the fourth quarter, securing the lead. Liam Boyd added an 11-play drive capped by a 51-yard field goal late in the game. Fitzgerald's first win since leading Northwestern to a victory over Nebraska came after Michigan State's competitive performance, particularly on defense.

Toledo's John Alan Richter threw a touchdown to Adjatay Dabbs in the third quarter, and Connor Walendzak ran for 71 yards. Michigan State's Cam Edwards, a transfer from Connecticut, rushed for 98 yards and scored a touchdown on the team's opening play. The Spartans dominated the first half, scoring on all five possessions, but held Toledo to four field goals and led 19-7 at halftime.

Fitzgerald, who was fired from Northwestern due to a hazing scandal, expressed gratitude for the team's performance. Michigan State will host Eastern Michigan on Sept. 12, while Toledo will face Central Connecticut State on the same date.
