Nepal disaster: M'sian families fear dwindling chances of finding missing loved ones alive

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Ten days after catastrophic floods wreaked havoc across the nation, rescuers in Nepal successfully extracted a Chinese national and a woman alive, officials confirmed on Saturday. The man was plucked from a hydropower tunnel, according to a social media update from the prime minister's office, bringing the total count of survivors to three workers rescued from the Trishuli hydropower project.

Two Nepalese workers were also pulled from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant on Friday. The Nepalese army led a joint rescue operation comprising military personnel and South Korean disaster experts, which resulted in the extraction of the man from a 225-meter tunnel (approximately 738 feet). He is currently undergoing a health evaluation.

Images depict him being airlifted to safety, accompanied by an army medic who monitored his condition during the flight. A photograph released by China's national broadcaster, CCTV, shows two rescuers transporting the man out of the tunnel. Approximately 900 workers remain missing from 12 hydropower projects scattered throughout Nepal, with around 500 presumed trapped in various tunnels, according to authorities. In the flood-stricken town of Nuwakot, a woman was rescued alive from her residence.
