Chinese worker, woman rescued 10 days after Nepal floods

Kathmandu witnessed the rescue of a Chinese national and a woman alive after devastating floods struck the country 10 days ago, officials announced on Saturday. The Chinese worker was pulled from a hydropower tunnel, marking the third worker alive rescued from the Trishuli hydropower project. Two Nepalese workers were also rescued from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant on Friday.

A joint rescue team consisting of Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts braved a 225-meter (738 feet) tunnel to save the Chinese man. He was airlifted to safety in an army helicopter, where he was promptly assessed by a medic. A photo released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed two rescuers carrying the man from the tunnel.

Meanwhile, a woman trapped in a house in the flood-ravaged Nuwakot town was also rescued alive and airlifted to Kathmandu. She was wrapped in a gray blanket as she was evacuated. The floods, likely triggered by a glacier collapse, claimed the lives of at least 1,300 people on August 26. Over 5,000 individuals remain missing, with approximately 900 workers reported missing across 12 hydropower projects in Nepal.
