NB8 Nations Secure $1B for Ukraine’s Winter Energy Needs

The Nordic-Baltic Eight nations have pledged $1 billion to bolster Ukraine's energy sector ahead of the upcoming winter months, according to First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal. Shmyhal emphasized the importance of addressing both immediate and long-term energy needs, advocating for decentralization and integration into the European energy market.

Throughout the ongoing war, Ukraine has demonstrated expertise in maintaining and restoring energy supplies amidst Russian attacks. The NB8, consisting of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden, has already allocated €918 million ($1 billion) for 2026 to provide Ukraine with energy resources and support its energy infrastructure.

This commitment arrives amidst a stalled debate within the EU regarding the use of immobilized Russian assets to cover Ukraine's financial deficits during the war. While several EU nations, including Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, and Spain, are pushing for the use of these assets, Belgium opposes the plan due to legal concerns over the assets' location at the Brussels-based Euroclear securities depository.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has firmly rejected the idea, stating it is "non-negotiable" and the "door is closed." EU foreign ministers are set to deliberate on the matter further during a meeting in Ireland next week.
