N. Korea likely to send vice minister to U.N. General Assembly this month

North Korea is anticipated to dispatch a vice foreign minister to the United Nations General Assembly this month, according to recent reports. Kim Son-gyong, who oversees international organizations, is expected to make a speech at the U.N. headquarters on September 28, the final day of the event. The list of speakers published by the U.N.

Secretariat confirms that a North Korean vice minister-level official will represent the nation and deliver a speech. North Korea has multiple vice foreign ministers, but diplomatic sources believe Kim is most likely to attend, having done so last year for the first time in seven years. Following the 2019 Hanoi summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Pyongyang refrained from sending a high-ranking official to the General Assembly from 2019 to 2024.

Instead, Kim Song, the ambassador to the U.N., provided the speeches. This year, expectations are high for the message North Korea will convey at the U.N., as Trump has indicated his willingness to meet with Kim Jong-un during this year's assembly.
