35 years, 2 absconders and a trail gone cold: How 1991 Jammu blast case was rebuilt

Altaf Hussain Sheikh, a well-respected businessman from Anantnag's Bijbehara, was arrested in August 2024 in connection with the 1991 Jammu Railway Station blast. The 56-year-old father of three was previously an established businessman and lived a seemingly ordinary life with his family. The blast, which occurred on April 2, 1991, killed three people and injured 18 others.

Over the years, authorities have made two more arrests linked to the case, though the original suspect has maintained his innocence. The police claim that they have built a solid case through verification of public records and documents, while the family insists that it is a case of mistaken identity. The case has been reopened under the leadership of a senior superintendent of police who has a history of tracking down absconding offenders.
