Mensah throws 5 TDs, Toney sets record in Miami’s win over Stanford

Darian Mensah delivered a stellar performance in his Miami debut, leading his team to a dominant 45-6 victory over Stanford. The seventh-ranked Hurricanes opened their season with a record-setting 234 yards receiving by Malachi Toney and five touchdown passes from Mensah. Mensah connected with Toney on touchdown passes during the first two drives of the game, and once again on a 47-yard pass in the third quarter, setting the school record.

Eddie Brown also had a standout performance with 220 yards receiving in 1984 against Boston College, known as the "Hail Flutie" game. Mensah made his first snap connection with Toney on a 48-yard pass to kick off the game, followed by a 23-yard touchdown pass to Toney and another 2-yard score on the next possession. Mensah added a 34-yard touchdown to Daylyn Upshaw in the second quarter, a 34-yarder to Cooper Barkate in the third, and the deep strike to Toney in the fourth quarter.

He finished the game 27-of-30 for 401 yards, setting the records for the most yards and touchdown passes in a debut for Miami. Toney, known for his dynamic play as a freshman, had 109 catches for 1,211 yards last season. Stanford's Davis Warren completed 214 yards in his first game, but failed to score a touchdown. Stanford hasn't started a season 2-0 since 2018.
