Kenya, EU deepen defence ties as maritime security takes centre stage

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya and the European Union are strengthening their defense and security cooperation, with a particular focus on maritime security and enhanced capabilities to counter complex regional threats, according to a recent meeting between the Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri and EU Chargé d’Affaires Ondřej Seimk.

The strategic dialogue explores ways to expand collaboration under the European Peace Facility (EPF), which supports Kenya's capacity to join peace and security initiatives. With Kenya emerging as a significant security player in East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean, maritime security remains a top priority, given the country's strategic position and the importance of maritime trade to its economy and security.

The KDF emphasized that securing Kenya's maritime space involves broader efforts, including safeguarding critical sea lanes and countering transnational threats that could disrupt trade and regional stability. Capability development, professional cooperation, and institutional resilience are also vital to boosting Kenya's role in regional peace support operations.

The partnership underscores Kenya's growing importance as a regional security actor and a dependable contributor to peacekeeping efforts.
