Kefas constitutes new task force to combat illegal mining in Taraba

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has approved the formation of a new task force aimed at combating illegal mining and environmental degradation in the state. The decision was communicated in a statement dated September 5, 2026, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Gebon Timothy Kataps. The eight-member team, headed by Major A.M. Ghali, will be responsible for enforcing government directives against illegal mining and forest destruction.

The other members include Captain K.R. Odenusi, ASP Ishaku Daniel, Iziogo Philip, Olakunde D, Kabiru Musa, Zibai Ayuba, and Suleiman Daniel. The task force will be backed by operational personnel from security agencies to bolster its enforcement efforts. Governor Kefas also approved the dissolution of all existing committees and task forces with similar functions.

The newly established team will now be responsible for enforcing the state's directives on illegal mining and environmental protection, working in tandem with a mobile court and submitting periodic reports. This development follows the shutdown of an illegal mining site in Garin Jatau on September 4, 2026, where three suspects were arrested.

The governor had previously suspended mining activities due to security concerns, leading to arrests and the dispersal of hundreds of illegal miners. The restructuring aims to further strengthen Taraba State's campaign against illegal mining and the degradation of natural resources.
