Japan aims to bolster defense capabilities from Iran war analysis

The Japanese Defense Ministry has outlined plans to enhance the nation's defense capabilities in response to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. In their initial assessment of the war, which began in February, the ministry emphasized the importance of utilizing defense equipment shared with allies and like-minded partners to ensure rapid supply from other countries.

Maintaining sufficient missile stockpiles during normal times and being prepared to swiftly increase production in emergencies were also deemed crucial, according to the report.

The ministry noted that Iran utilizes its geographical advantage to inflict significant costs on adversaries with relatively low military expenditure, effectively controlling the Strait of Hormuz by laying naval mines. Japan should consider combat strategies that leverage its own geographical characteristics, including being surrounded by the sea on all sides, the report added.

The United States employs artificial intelligence (AI) to expedite decision-making and effectively execute operations, as demonstrated by its ability to target around 1,000 sites in 24 hours. However, the ministry also cautioned about the potential for AI to make incorrect judgments. It stressed the importance of establishing a process that maximizes the benefits of AI while ensuring appropriate human involvement.

The insights from the report will inform discussions leading up to the planned revision of key security documents by the end of this year. These revisions aim to bolster Japan's defense capabilities in the face of growing threats from China, North Korea, and Russia.
