Israel carries out raids near Sour in southern Lebanon

The Israeli military launched a bombing campaign in Lebanon outside its security zone shortly after announcing control of the strategic Ali Al Taher ridge. This move has heightened tensions and strained the country's fragile ceasefire. The strikes resulted in five deaths and 24 injuries across five locations in southern Lebanon, including the western Bekaa for the first time since June.

Two individuals were killed in Nabatieh, and 15 were wounded in Ramadiyeh, including paramedics, women, and young girls. Other areas targeted included Mayfadoun, Zawtar, Wadi Al Salouqi, and Wadi Al Hujeir. Hezbollah condemned the aggression, accusing Israel of escalating its "crimes against Lebanon" through killing, shelling, and the demolition of homes and villages.

The group called on the Lebanese government to reassess its calculations as it plans to disarm non-state actors, including Hezbollah. The escalation coincides with Israel's upcoming elections, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party facing challenges after losing popularity since October 7, 2023. Experts believe the campaign is driven by Netanyahu's desire to showcase the capture of Hezbollah fighters and tunnels, boosting his electoral prospects.

Military analysts warn that Israel's occupation of Lebanese territory, beyond its self-proclaimed security zone, could lead to further expansion. Iran has warned the US of a potential retaliatory response against any Israeli attack on Hezbollah positions on the ridge.
