On September 5, 2026, Gurugram experienced a brief but intense hour of rainfall on a Saturday afternoon, providing temporary relief from the oppressive heat but also causing significant waterlogging throughout the city. Traffic congestion ensued, with vehicles crawling along the Delhi-Jaipur highway between Sarhaul Border and Rajiv Chowk.

The heaviest rainfall of 36 mm occurred within an hour, leading to water accumulation in key areas and on connecting routes. Commuters encountered delays, particularly those leaving work later on the weekend.

Waterlogging was most severe in areas such as Rajiv Chowk, Sohna Road, Golf Course Extension Road, Udyog Vihar, and the lanes surrounding Sector 14, where traffic slowed considerably. The water accumulation in existing potholes on Udyog Vihar Phase 3 and Old Delhi-Gurugram Road heightened the risk of accidents, forcing drivers to drive cautiously and at reduced speeds. Police intervention was immediate, with traffic police deployed at major intersections and vulnerable spots to manage the congestion.

In response to the heavy rain and waterlogging, the Gurugram Traffic Police issued an advisory for motorists to take a U-turn at IFFCO Chowk and enter via the Aya Nagar border. Alternatively, those heading to the airport were directed to use the Dwarka Expressway. Drainage teams from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram and district administration were working to clear water using suction pumps.

However, the India Meteorological Department warned that intermittent rainfall could persist in Gurugram and surrounding areas over the next 24 to 48 hours, potentially worsening waterlogging in low-lying areas. The district administration advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially waterlogged roads, underpasses, and low-lying areas, while warning against crossing such roads or areas near trees, electricity poles, and overhead power lines.

Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh, chairing the District Disaster Management Authority, directed all departments and emergency response agencies to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
