Iran war latest: Iranian oil tanker targeted in US strike, says state media

Iranian media outlets have reported a series of explosions near Kharg Island, the country's principal oil facility in the Gulf, as tensions between Iran and the United States escalate. The news came days after fresh fighting erupted between the two nations. Fars news agency stated that explosions were heard by their correspondent, although no smoke was visible, while SNN news agency claimed that an Iranian tanker had been targeted by the US near the island.

However, there were no immediate statements from US or Iranian authorities. The conflict between the adversaries reignited last Sunday, with US strikes on Iran as their six-month-long war entered its final phase. In response, Iran retaliated by targeting US military bases in Kuwait and the UAE, vowing to seek vengeance for civilian deaths allegedly caused by Washington at a wedding ceremony.

Both sides are also contesting control over the crucial Strait of Hormuz, with Iran currently blocking shipping lanes, while Washington maintains a counter-blockade on Iranian ports.
