German Shepherd bites Ahmedabad woman for 2nd time in 4 months, owner booked

The owner of a German Shepherd in Ahmedabad, India, faces legal consequences after her pet allegedly bit a 54-year-old neighbor for the second time within four months. The incident occurred on September 4 when the woman, Kapila Mahendra Prajapati, was sweeping her front yard. The German Shepherd, named Rani, bit her on the right hand. Four months prior, the same dog had bitten Prajapati on her right leg and left hand.

Prajapati filed an FIR with the Ahmedabad City Police, leading to the booking of Dharmishtha Dinesh Prajapati, the dog's owner. The owner violated provisions BNS sections 291 and 125(a), which deal with negligent conduct towards animals and actions endangering life or personal safety of others. The Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) took swift action, seizing Rani and placing her in a special hostel at the Dog Welfare Center in Danilimda.

The AMC confirmed that Rani had been vaccinated and her certificate remained valid until September 30, 2026.

CNCD Head Naresh Rajput revealed that since new dog registration regulations came into effect in December 2024, the AMC has seized and impounded about four to five dogs, filing FIRs in each case. These seized dogs are kept in the hostels for at least a month and owners are required to pay for their upkeep. Upon release, owners must provide an affidavit ensuring the dog will not be taken to the previously incident location.

Between January 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026, a total of 17,467 pet owners registered 19,839 dogs in Ahmedabad. Among the most popular breeds are Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Shih Tzus, Golden Retrievers, and Pomeranians.
