German rocket reaches space as Europe enters satellite launch race

Isar Aerospace, a German start-up, launched its first rocket into space from a site in Arctic Norway on Saturday, marking a milestone for Europe in the satellite launch industry. The uncrewed Spectrum rocket, designed for small and medium-sized payloads, became the first commercial flight to reach orbit from continental Europe. European nations have expressed interest in a growing market for space missions. "We're in orbit! And just made European history," Isar said in a post on social media.

This achievement bolsters European security in turbulent times, according to Norway's minister of trade and industry, Cecilie Myrseth. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the launch site in March, highlighting Europe's efforts to secure greater autonomy as the global order shifts. The Spectrum rocket carried five small satellites and an in-flight technological experiment, as reported by Isar. It was Isar's second launch, following a failed attempt in 2023 that resulted in the rocket exploding shortly after take-off.

The March 2025 launch was deemed a success by Isar for generating valuable data. Global players in the satellite launch market include SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, and ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and Safran. Norway's Andoeya Spaceport, where the Spectrum rocket blasted off, is the closest rival to other European sites, such as Sweden's Esrange and Britain's SaxaVord.

Isar has secured about €200 million (US$232 million) from the European Space Agency to fund new rockets and expand its infrastructure. The German company is also developing a second launch site in Canada.
