EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance to Hold Inaugural Meeting in Brussels

The inaugural meeting of the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance will convene on September 11th in Brussels, according to two industry sources. The all-day event will feature Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The primary objective of the gathering is to assess progress and outline the alliance's initial activities, according to the official and a third source.

The alliance comprises 19 companies from the EU and Ukraine, including ORQA, Indra Group, Fincantieri, WB Electronics/WB Group, Destinus, Delair, RSI Europe, TERMA A/S, Quantum Systems, Skyfall Industries, Greentech Harvest, Tencore, Deviro, Vyriy Industry, Scientific Production Company 'ATHLON AVIA', TAF Industries, UFORCE, and F-Drones.

Simonas Šatūnas, head of Kubilius's cabinet, expressed interest in learning from the existing ecosystem and dynamics between governments and drone industries. However, the potential outcomes of the meeting remain uncertain, with one industry source skeptical, describing the event as "just another meeting." The Commission originally invited members back in early May, with the alliance's main goals being to enhance European capabilities in drones and counter-drone technology and to establish a multi-layered framework for sensor and effector integration across Europe.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen introduced the concept of a drone alliance during her State of the Union speech last year as part of efforts to counter airspace incursions. The EU-Ukraine "drone deal," signed under this partnership, aims to create a unified framework to facilitate the implementation of signed drone agreements between Kyiv and several EU/EFTA capitals.

The deal may utilize up to €10 billion in unspent Security Action for Europe (SAFE) funds, as revealed by von der Leyen during a Kyiv visit on July 15th. Recent drone incursions in Eastern European nations, such as Estonia and Romania, have prompted calls for the next EU budget to address the impacts of Russia's war on frontline countries.
