Electoral momentum, political pressure may be behind Zahid’s push for early polls, says analyst

Political analyst Dr Azmi Hassan suggests that Malaysian opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's push for an earlier 16th general election (GE16) may be influenced by a combination of electoral momentum and increasing political pressure. The momentum gained from recent state elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan remains crucial for Barisan Nasional (BN), while the outcome of the Melaka polls could further impact the coalition's calculations.

Additionally, the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Tabung Haji and developments surrounding Felda are factors that might be adding to the pressure on Zahid.

Zahid, who serves as BN chairman, recently expressed his preference for holding the GE16 earlier instead of waiting for the current parliamentary term to conclude. He believes this would provide the government with an opportunity to secure a fresh mandate from voters, though BN is prepared to face the polls even if the current term runs out. According to Dr Azmi, Zahid's stance reflects a desire to obtain the people's mandate if the election is held earlier, although BN is willing to proceed with the polls if necessary.

The BN's approach to potential future cooperation with other coalitions, such as Perikatan Nasional (PN), is guided by a careful weighing of political benefits against potential harm. This approach was evident during BN's negotiations during the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections. By not attending the PAS muktamar, Zahid reportedly maintained greater flexibility in BN's political options, allowing the party to preserve its ability to engage in cooperation with PN if desired.

Sending the BN secretary-general instead, Dr Azmi suggests, enables BN to foster communication with PAS and PN while keeping its options open and assessing the evolving political landscape ahead of the Melaka state election.
