DNA samples from Nepal flood victims’ families taken, says minister

Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan disclosed that DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians still missing after Nepal's recent floods and landslides have been collected. These samples will be transported to Nepal for comprehensive DNA matching, a process that could take considerable time due to the large number of victims.

According to Hasan, Malaysia is also prepared to dispatch experts from its chemistry department to support Nepal's authorities in this DNA matching procedure, should it be necessary. Addressing reporters after a visit to the Pinggiran Senawang Independence Carnival, Hasan emphasized that numerous other nations plan to contribute their experts to facilitate the identification of DNA matches for the victims, thereby accelerating the overall process.

He further reported that Nepal has been demonstrating exceptional cooperation with the Malaysian embassy in Kathmandu, providing daily updates on the search operation and the current situation on the ground. The next-of-kin have been regularly informed of any new developments regarding their loved ones. Additionally, Nepal has restricted the entry of foreign search and rescue teams to prevent overcrowding and potential complications for local coordination efforts.

Today, 11 specialists from Malaysia's Special Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) embarked on a 10-day mission to Nepal to aid in search and rescue operations. A total of 55 Malaysians were reported missing following the disaster on August 26, with some of the 77 individuals who were located safe in Tibet and Nepal subsequently returning to Malaysia. The remaining victims are anticipated to be repatriated on flights organized by their respective travel agencies.
