Coal Stocks At 50 Thermal Power Plants Fall To Critical Levels Amid High Power Demand, Monsoon Disruptions

Thermal power plants in India are grappling with critically low coal reserves, affecting 50 plants currently deemed deficient, according to Central Electricity Authority data. This shortage coincides with heightened power demand and monsoon-related transportation setbacks. The affected facilities, totaling nearly 224 GW in capacity, hold just 28.2 million tonnes of coal, representing just 48% of the necessary 58.7 million tonnes.

This scarcity equates to roughly nine days of operations at 85% plant load factor, compared to the ideal 19-day reserve. Despite this precarious situation, the Coal Ministry asserts no immediate danger to power generation. Of the 50 plants, 45 depend on domestic coal, four on imports, and one utilizes washery rejects. The Ministry emphasizes these plants are under constant daily monitoring by an inter-ministerial group, with additional supplies arranged as needed.

The official noted the classification is routine monitoring under CEA guidelines, not a reflection of fuel scarcity. Monsoon disruptions are anticipated to subside by September, potentially alleviating coal supply constraints. Some thermal plants have postponed maintenance to maintain uninterrupted electricity generation amid robust demand.

Authorities remain vigilant, expecting improved coal stock levels and logistics once monsoon effects wane. Still, they emphasize the current supply situation does not immediately threaten electricity availability.
