Breaking: Williams sisters knocked out by Aussie Joint and Chan

The match took place at Arthur Ashe Stadium, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd. Joint and Chan overcame a 0-5 deficit in the deciding 10-point tiebreaker to secure a 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (10/7) victory over the storied Williams sisters.

This marks the second consecutive grand slam that Joint has knocked Serena out of the tournament, previously doing so at Wimbledon's Centre Court. After losing the second set in a tiebreaker, the Williams sisters attempted a dramatic comeback, holding a 5-0 lead in the first to 10, but ultimately succumbed to Joint and Chan's relentless defense.

They had been expected to make their grand slam doubles return at Wimbledon, but Serena's knee injury forced them to withdraw, delaying their return to the Grand Slam stage. The Williams sisters, who previously won 14 grand slam titles together in women's doubles, including Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012, had not lost a match together in over a year.

Serena had returned to professional tennis in the summer of 2022 after previously retiring following her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, but has now suffered two heartbreaking defeats with her sister.
