Lauer had been a key player for Toronto, going 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA in the previous season. However, his performance declined and he expressed frustration with Toronto's strategy of using him as an opening pitcher.

Lauer was traded to the Dodgers in May, where he seemed to find success, going 7-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 games, including 12 starts. The Dodgers acquired Lauer in exchange for cash. Despite enjoying a successful start in Los Angeles, Lauer's resurgence came to an abrupt end in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. He allowed seven runs and eight hits in just three innings, leading to his placement on the injured list due to left elbow inflammation.
