‘Behavioural issues’ behind Mohammed Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq axe? Fresh details emerge from PCB shock move

The Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) decision to remove seven players and two coaches following defeats in the first two Tests against England has unveiled new details, with behavioral concerns reportedly playing a role in the dismissal of senior players Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, and Salman Ali Agha. Pakistan's poor performances in the opening two matches led to the sweeping changes ahead of the final Test in Edgbaston.

Test coach Sarfaraz has been replaced by Mike Hesson, while the white-ball coach will oversee the team for the final Test. Rizwan's poor performances, decision-making, and lack of commitment due to his injury were factors in his removal. Imam-ul-Haq's absence from both Lord's innings due to a calf strain raised questions about his commitment.

Agha, who captained Pakistan in the first Test, was dropped for the second match and subsequently sent home before the Edgbaston Test. The trio of Rizwan, Imam, and Agha are expected to appear before a committee to explain their conduct during Pakistan's tours of the West Indies and England. The other players sent back were removed following Hesson's recommendation.

The shake-up could also impact Pakistan’s selection committee, with senior selector Aaqib Javed potentially removed as part of a larger clean-up plan by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Misbah-ul-Haq's resignation followed a show-cause notice issued by the PCB regarding the selection committee's decisions. The PCB has also questioned the selection panel about Imam and Rizwan's inclusion in the England tour squad and the criteria used for selection.

The shake-up might lead to a new selection committee being appointed after the England tour. Mike Hesson may remain in charge beyond the England series, with the PCB keen on appointing him as the permanent head coach, depending on his willingness to take up the role. The focus now lies on the disciplinary hearings for Rizwan, Imam, and Agha, as well as Aaqib Javed's position on the selection panel under Naqvi's plan to overhaul the PCB's cricketing structure.
