ASUU strike: We’ll not grade students’ exam scripts – IMSU lecturers vow

Lecturers at Imo State University, IMSU, have declared they will refrain from assessing or assigning grades to the exam papers of students participating in tests taken during the current ASUU strike. Stephen Oguji, the Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Universities' branch at IMSU, announced this in a statement to journalists in Owerri on Saturday.

Oguji emphasized that the union is resolute in maintaining the integrity of the academic process, specifically warning students that they should not complete their studies through an examination procedure lacking moral authority. He clarified that the exams themselves were not developed by the lecturers and will not be evaluated by them.

"We do not wish students to jeopardize their examinations. We do not want them to lose their academic session, most importantly, we do not want them to graduate through a process whose credibility may later be questioned," Oguji reiterated. The union leader identified the real opponents of the students as those in high-ranking positions who could resolve the issues that sparked the strike.

He urged students to unite with the union and demand that the Imo State Government adhere to the Federal Government's ASUU 2025 agreement concerning university funding. "Dear Students, your true adversaries are not the lecturers. We are advocating for an educational system that functions effectively for you, for us and future generations.

Therefore, instead of opposing your lecturers, join forces with us. Engage with those who possess the authority to resolve this crisis. Urge the government to implement the agreement and bring an end to the strike," Oguji concluded. He stated that lecturers are prepared to resume teaching as they wish to ensure that the exams are administered correctly, and students graduate with integrity.

He called upon concerned authorities to implement the agreement, which he believes aims to improve the working conditions for union members.
