Asian Games’ biggest stars & top countries to watch

The 20th Asian Games, set to take place in Japan from September 19 to October 4, will feature more than 11,000 athletes competing for medals and captivating audiences with their skills. India will be testing itself against its own record of a 107-medal haul at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, aiming to prove its worth in emerging sports.

China is expected to dominate the medal tally, with their athletes consistently proving their caliber in international events. They are the overwhelming favorites, having won the most medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and consistently topping the table in the Asian Games since 1982. With 36 Olympic medal holders from 13 sports, China is on track for a 12th consecutive finish at the top of the table.

In table tennis, Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu are the top contenders. Sun Yingsha, the current World No. 1, is known for her explosive style and tactical intelligence. Wang Manyu, an experienced campaigner, has won multiple championships, including the Olympics. Both athletes will aim to solidify their authority in the sport at the Asian Games.

In diving, Chen Yuxi and Wang Zongyuan, both Olympic champions, will lead China's diving charge. These elite divers have a strong performance history at major international events and will test their skills in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Li Wenwen, a double Olympic champion, double world champion, and three-time Asian champion, will be another athlete to watch out for in weightlifting. China's well-designed talent pipeline has made weightlifting a sport in which China has started winning medals on the world stage.

Japan, relying on its home advantage and past experience, will also be testing its mettle in this event. With strong representation in various sports such as gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, badminton, judo, and skateboarding, Japan has many chances to win medals across disciplines. Former World No. 1 badminton player Akane Yamaguchi, Japan's jiu-jitsu athlete, and other regional talents will add regional flavor to the Games.
