Apologise now or resign – PDP fires back at Gov Nwifuru over APC dominance statement

The Ebonyi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has strongly rebuked Governor Francis Nwifuru after his recent statements criticizing opposition figures in the state. Darlington Peter-Onwe, PDP's Publicity Secretary in Ebonyi, called for the Governor to either withdraw his remarks, apologize unreservedly, or resign from office.

The PDP asserts that the Governor's words are inflammatory and could spark political violence in the run-up to the 2027 general elections. They insist that the governor must take ownership of his words, emphasizing that the rhetoric has already provoked hostility towards opposition party members and media practitioners in the state.

Peter-Onwe emphasized that the Governor should apologize to the residents of Ebonyi, or resign, as he has violated the fundamental duties of governance laid out in Section 14 of the Constitution. This section mandates that the primary responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property, and Nwifuru's inflammatory statements now imply a threat of violence.

Earlier this week, Governor Nwifuru directed newly sworn-in local government council chairmen and their deputies to enforce full All Progressives Congress (APC) dominance at the grassroots levels ahead of the 2027 polls. He threatened swift consequences for any failure to secure their local government areas.
