Anak Krakatau’s six eruptions recorded

Anak Krakatau, a volcano in Indonesia, experienced six eruptions overnight, sending rocks and volcanic ash into the air, according to the country's Geological Agency. The eruptions continued at 4:40am local time on September 5, 2026, and the agency reported rumbling sounds could still be heard from the Krakatau Pasauran Geological Agency Monitoring Post.

Since July 2, the volcano had been active, with its alert status raised to Level III. Although the height of the eruption column could not be observed, a bright red glow of the eruption plume was visible. Seismic activity associated with the eruptions was recorded since Friday morning, with a maximum amplitude of 33 millimeters lasting 14 seconds.

Three eruptions were recorded on Friday morning, followed by a lull before additional eruptions the following day. By 12:01am local time on Saturday, six eruptions had been documented. The Geological Agency described the activity as resembling a "lava fountain" capable of generating lava flows, noting that continuous eruptions lasting several hours were typical.

Residents in West Java, Banten, and Lampung reported booming sounds and vibrations during the volcanic activity. Despite the ongoing eruptions, the agency stated that Anak Krakatau's growth since the December 22, 2018 eruption remained relatively small, and there was no immediate threat of a tsunami-triggering collapse. Indonesia is situated along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a seismically active region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
