300-Year-Old Haveli Of Maratha Commander-In-Chief Naroshankar Discovered In MP’s Datia

In the small town of Unao, situated 15 km from Datia district headquarters, Madhya Pradesh, the state archaeology department has unearthed a nearly 300-year-old haveli of significant historical importance. Constructed between 1742 and 1745, the haveli served as the residence of Naroshankar, the commander-in-chief of the Maratha Empire under Balaji Baji Rao, the eighth Peshwa of the Maratha Empire.

This period marked the zenith of the Maratha Empire, which was governed by the Peshwas as de facto rulers. Naroshankar's military prowess expanded Maratha control to encompass key territories in Bundelkhand, including Orchha, Jhansi, Danara, Chanderi, Karera, Pachore, and Kalpi. His most notable achievement was conquering the Jhansi Fort in 1746 following a victory over the Bundelas.

Archaeologist Wasim Khan of the state archaeology directorate noted that while Naroshankar is mentioned in historical texts, this haveli represents the first physical structure linked to his legacy. The department aims to protect and conserve the neglected haveli, potentially transforming it into a tourist attraction or a heritage hotel.

Unao is also home to the ancient Balaji Sun temple. In a related discovery, the archaeology department found a 280-year-old letter from Nana Saheb to Naroshankar, detailing administrative arrangements in the newly acquired territory. The letter, written in Modi script with Nana Saheb's official seal, was discovered under the Gyan Bharatam Mission.

A formal proposal from Datia district collector is required before the haveli is brought under state protection and developed as a tourist attraction, according to Madan Bibhishan Nagargoje, the commissioner of archaeology, archives, and museums.
