Zelensky slams his security services for ‘unacceptable’ shootout

Kyiv, Ukraine - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his dissatisfaction with his security services following a shootout between the military intelligence agency and the State Security Service. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight in the capital, left several officers injured. Zelensky stated that both agencies must be held accountable for their actions, which he deemed "absolutely unacceptable."

Two security officials, one from each agency, have been identified as suspects, and an investigation is currently underway. Zelensky emphasized the importance of establishing the truth and preventing such incidents from recurring. He further revealed that the heads of both agencies will be assessed, with deputy heads who bear responsibility for the situation facing dismissal.

According to Ukrainian media, the conflict may be connected to the SBU's detention of a deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, a battalion of anti-Kremlin Russians fighting for Kyiv. The SBU claimed it was engaged in counter-sabotage work to prevent a murder ordered by Russia, citing contacts between the commander and Russia's special services.

Meanwhile, the GUR asserted that there was a targeted disinformation campaign against it. Both agencies play a crucial role in Ukraine's war effort and have seen their powers significantly expand during Russia's invasion.
