Zelensky slams his security services for ‘unacceptable’ shootout

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has vehemently criticized his security services following a shootout between rival agencies in Kyiv. The incident, which left several officers injured, occurred in broad daylight amid Ukraine's ongoing war against Russia. Zelensky expressed his disapproval, stating that both agencies acted in an "absolutely unacceptable" manner.

He announced plans to dismiss several high-ranking officials from the State Security Service (SBU) and the military intelligence agency (GUR). The two security officials suspected of involvement are currently under investigation. Zelensky emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth and preventing such incidents from recurring.

He also noted that the heads of both agencies would be assessed, with deputy heads responsible for the situation facing dismissal. According to Ukrainian media, the conflict may be connected to the SBU's detention of a Russian Volunteer Corps deputy commander, whom they claim was ordered to commit murder by Russia. The SBU stated they were conducting counter-sabotage to thwart the alleged Russian plot, alleging they had uncovered connections between the commander and Russia's special services.

In response, the GUR alleged a targeted disinformation campaign against it. Both agencies have played crucial roles in Ukraine's war effort and have seen their powers significantly expand during Russia's invasion.
