The Tale of Genji, written around the year 1000, stands as one of the oldest novels in the world, crafted by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady in Empress Shōshi’s court. The story unfolds in the opulent and meticulous world of the Imperial Court in Kyoto, where relationships were deeply entwined with politics and the pursuit of power and prestige.

Ever since its debut, Genji has captivated readers with its vivid portrayal of a vanished civilization, its characters' emotions remaining as fresh as ever despite the antiquated language and customs.

The protagonist, Genji, is the son of Emperor and one of his low-ranking concubines, his life portrayed through a series of romantic escapades and the pursuit of beauty. He is described as incredibly beautiful, possessing extraordinary skills in poetry, calligraphy, music, dance, painting, and knowledge of Chinese literature. His numerous romantic conquests often lead to a trail of tears as the women involved weep at his departure.

Despite Genji's luxurious and extravagant lifestyle, he occasionally yearns for a monastic life, but his worldly attachments prove too strong to relinquish.

One must immerse oneself in the footnotes to truly grasp the stark differences between the Heian-era Imperial Court and our contemporary society. The characters' actions and thoughts are often so distant from our understanding that it's challenging to relate to them.
