Why Pertamina Scraps STNK Checks for Subsidized Fuel

Pertamina Patra Niaga has abandoned its plan to require motorists to show their Vehicle Registration Certificate (STNK) when buying subsidized fuel at gas stations (SPBU), the company announced on September 4, 2026. The decision to drop the measure was made after receiving widespread public criticism and complaints, according to Kitty Andhora, the VP of Corporate Communication for Pertamina Patra Niaga.

The company expressed regret for any inconvenience the policy might have caused and stated that all future fuel distribution policies would be coordinated with relevant regulators, including BPH Migas, local governments, and other stakeholders. Despite the scrapped STNK requirement, Pertamina Patra Niaga continues to strengthen its oversight measures to ensure subsidized fuel reaches its intended recipients.

As of September 3, 2026, the company had advised over 900 gas stations in its operational areas on how to handle the subsidized fuel program. The company has also announced that it will impose penalties on gas stations found to be in violation of regulations, including written warnings, supply suspensions, and termination of business relationships.

To combat misuse of subsidized fuel, Pertamina Patra Niaga is working with law enforcement agencies and maintains oversight through the Subsidized Fuel QR Code available in the MyPertamina application.
