WHL tests new ‘no return’ overtime rule

The Western Hockey League (WHL) is experimenting with a new "no return" rule during the preseason to alter the way three-on-three overtime is played. The intended purpose is to reduce teams repeatedly leaving the offensive zone, instead promoting aggressive play and increasing game speed. Teams that bring the puck back into the neutral zone during overtime will have play halted, and the subsequent faceoff will be held in the offending team's defensive zone, barring them from making line changes.

Defenses of the rule highlight its potential to expedite the game and inject more excitement, while opponents, such as WHL general manager Dale Derkatch, argue it could lead to a slowdown due to increased stoppages and puck faceoffs. Referees will face the challenge of determining whether a team intentionally retreats into the neutral zone or if it is forced back by pressure or other factors.
