US, allies push IAEA to report Iran to UN Security Council

The United States, Britain, France, and Germany are rallying together to push the U.N. nuclear watchdog to report Iran to the UN Security Council, according to diplomats and preliminary documents obtained by Reuters. This move would mark the first such report against Iran in over two decades. The proposal stems from a June 12 resolution last year, which deemed Iran in violation of its non-proliferation commitments for failing to cooperate fully with an investigation into uranium traces discovered at undisclosed locations.

This led to a retaliatory airstrike by Israel on Iran's nuclear facilities, followed by a similar US intervention. Since then, Iran has barred International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors from accessing the targeted sites or confirming the fate of its enriched uranium stockpile, some of which was enriched to nearly weapons-grade levels.

The forthcoming resolution by the IAEA's 35-nation board, if adopted, would signal a significant escalation in the ongoing disagreement over IAEA access to these facilities.
